Snowdogs

We got LOTS of snow last night. Because the wind was blowing so hard, the drifts were deep.

So today we took the dogs out to play.

In places, the snow was over a foot deep.
Orsa and Havana race each other to get the ball.
When they lose the ball, Havana just digs for it.

Bella's too good for fetch. She just stands there and looks pretty.

When she's on her game, Havana will even catch snowballs.

The "Blizzard" of '09

Well, according to all the news reports, we're currently smack dab in the middle of the Blizzard of '09. Only in reality, it's not doing much of anything right now.

It was really windy yesterday and snowed some. The roads were sheets of black ice and driving was pretty treacherous. Today there are drifts of snow 12 inches deep, but in other areas you can see the grass poking through. (Here's a a picture.) But from the way they were talking, you'd have thought we'd be housebound for days with snow up to the roof.

So much for the Big Dump. Of course, all the weather reports and news made it sound like it was going to be a lot worse that it actually is. They always do that. (You'd think we'd learn by now.)

Anyway, because of all the media hype, many businesses, churches and schools closed today. The gym is closed. All the military bases are closed. Even the public library is closed.

But don't worry. Compassion is opening at noon. We won't let a little ol' blizzard stop us.

We're doing God's business!

SkiDo 2009

The weekend in Frisco was awesome. What a way to start the year.

We stayed in this amazing condo. It was spacious, with gorgeous views out every window. And you want to know the best part? It had heated floors.
We played a lot of games. I introduced everyone to one of my family's favorite games ... Dutch Blitz.
On Saturday John made us a gourmet breakfast of French Toast with Blackberry Syrup. French Toast is my favorite food. Ever.

Then everyone went skiing. (Well, everyone except me.)
We had a delish dinner at the Dam Brewery in Dillon.
Barb had her Nikon and took one billion pictures. This is one of my favorites.
Sunday we went snowshoeing. The day was perfect. One of the best days I've ever spent in the mountains. Seriously ... it doesn't get much better than this.
I claim to hate snow but I think I changed my mind.

Here we are talking to Matt. Matt is VERY tall. Apparently he was saying something very funny.
Awww ...

Chris thought it might be funny to dump me in the snow.

Who's laughing now, Bubs?

The Sach

My sister Sara got engaged a few weeks ago. She's getting married to this great guy named Zach. (Henceforth, they will be know as The Sach.)

This last year, The Sach decided to move from San Diego to upstate New York. As my sister is now a resident of New York, engaged to a native New Yorker, her wedding is going to be in New York.

In February.

I don't know if you heard, but just last week The White Witch took up residence in New York. She announced her arrival to the area with a severe ice storm. President Bush actually declared a state of emergency.

It's FLIPPIN' freezing.

Here are some pictures sent from The Sach ...

I'm a summer girl. I love me some tank tops and flip flops and the beach. And I hate being cold.

I'm going to start praying right this second for an early summer.

(In case you missed it above, my brother designed them a really cool wedding web site.)

Snow Globe

I have this weird idea that I'm living in a snow globe and someone shook it up today. The view through the window of my work space is gray, cold and dreary. The snow has been falling steadily all day long and it finally feels like Christmastime. Three weeks ...

Speaking of Christmas, I decorated my house the other day with my collection of Christmas-themed items. All six of them. Seriously, my lack of holiday flair is a little embarrassing. I apparently don't have a smidgen of Martha Stewart in me. I think I'll go buy myself a little tree after work.

This is the first Christmas that my whole family won't be together. It's going to be very different and I'm trying hard not to be sad about it. It's going to feel rather lonely without my two sisters. (And who will play the other part of the Sleigh Ride duet on the piano with me?)

Next Thursday is Compassion's Christmas Banquet. I found out yesterday that my sister-in-law Valeen and I bought the same dress. (Apparently we both have impeccable taste.) At least we bought different colors. I have a feeling, though, that we'll still be the Tschamler Twins.

That's it for today's update. I leave you with a picture of what I look at all day long ...
I never thought I'd like working in a cubicle, but with the snow falling outside, a cup of hot chocolate (second of the day!) and Tony Bennett singing me "Winter Wonderland," it's a pretty sweet deal.

Punctured: A Snowy Sunday Story

We had our first real snowstorm of the winter today. I woke up this morning and looked out the window to find several inches of accumulation and lots of large, fluffy snowflakes falling.

I got ready for church, bundled up and then took Havana out. She loves the snow and I like to take her out when it is snowing because there's usually no one around and I can let her run around off leash. That's what I did today.

After about 10 minutes, I called her back to me and we headed toward the house. When we got to the entryway, I looked down and noticed red paw prints in the snow. It looked like one of her feet was bleeding a bit.

As soon as she stepped through the door, I saw that it wasn't just bleeding a bit, it was gushing blood. Being a young lab, she ignored my command to "stay" and within a few seconds, there were large puddles of blood everywhere. As she moved around, more blood splattered all around, both from the growing puddles as well as from her still bleeding foot. I grabbed a bunch of paper towels and the masking tape and crafted a crude bandage so I could stop the blood from spurting everywhere. Already, the tile by the front door looked like a gruesome murder scene.

As the roads were snow-packed and icy, I was relieved to find out that the emergency vet was only a couple miles away. I taped a couple more layers of paper towels on her (the blood was soaking through her "bandage" at an alarming rate) and headed out.

Considering how much blood she had lost, she was surprisingly animated when we arrived. As she investigated all the new smells, she tracked bloody footprints all over the lobby and exam room. After a short examination, the vet said she had a deep puncture wound in her paw that had hit an artery (thus the massive amounts of blood.) She would need to be anesthetized and need emergency surgery to fix the wound.

Several hours later, I called the vet and found out that, in the process of fixing her foot, they had discovered a gash several inches long on her chest (the result of an encounter with a barbed wire fence last week) which they also stitched up. They were still having trouble stopping the bleeding, and thinking she might have hemophilia, gave her a blood test, but thankfully it was negative.

I picked her up with strict instructions to keep her off her foot as much as possible, to restrict her activity and to keep the Elizabethan Collar on her for two weeks.

The surprise barbed wire injury.

Here is her paw, which I am supposed to keep dry. With a foot of snow on the ground. Right.

When I put the collar on her, she won't move. She just sits there with a pitiful, forlorn look on her face ...

Poor sweet Havana.

On My Mind ...

A little free association for this Wednesday morning. Welcome to my brain.

My legs are jello. I went back to spin class this morning, for the first time in, oh ... three months or so. I used to go 2-3 times per week consistently. I had some pretty good motivation to get in shape back then. Winter's coming on fast, though, so I'm trying to get back into groove.

Speaking of winter, I heard on the radio the other day that according to an almanac from, like 1957 or something, this winter is predicted to be one of the worst in recent history. Ugh. I'm still recovering from the winter we had two years ago. I'm not sure I'm ready for this.

I'm excited that reality TV season is starting up again! I've missed it. The Biggest Loser (a.k.a. Big Fat Loser) started last night. And I hear that The Amazing Race has a new season starting. (John, wish you were here!) And also Survivor. Which I haven't watched for a long time, but which is primarily responsible for originally cultivating my taste for reality TV. (At least if we are dumped on with snow we'll have something to do.)

Here's some good news ... we only have about six weeks left of political ads. Isn't that great? This election will be interesting. I'm actually kind of excited to vote! And I'm even more excited that the ads will stop.

My boss just stopped by my desk with donuts. I just three hours ago kicked off my new health goals and now this. How's that for timing? Get thee behind me, donuts! Thankfully, I was able to abstain. If they were Krispy Kremes, I might have been doomed, but they were only Dunkin Donuts.

I have started a Clothing Coop with a couple friends from work. Through a random Sisterhood-of-the-Traveling-Pants-esque situation last week, we discovered that we are all the same size. So we decided to hail back to our college days where roommates shared a communal wardrobe. I'm very excited about this Coop! We haven't worked out all the details yet, but we will most likely trade items on a monthly basis. (Although just between you and me, I do think I'm getting the far better end of the deal.) Both girls have a much more distinct style then I do. Maybe I'll post a picture of me wearing a new Coop outfit.

Happy Hump Day.

Crooked Creek, Take 2

I have no idea what happened, but let's try this again ...

I spent last weekend (well, two weekends ago, now) volunteering at a camp up near Winter Park. There was bloads of snow and so I had some fun with the camera.

I've also tried out a few things I learned in Photoshop.
(That program is flippin' sweet!)

Here are the steps going up to the cabin we stayed in.

I'm not sure why, but I love this picture for some reason.

I thought the snow on the roof looked kind of Salvador Dali-ish.

Here I am with my friend Anne during one of our short breaks.

Fun times, but I can't wait until halter tops and flip flops weather!

Weekend in Winter Park, CO

My small group rented a house in Winter Park for the weekend. Despite the almost non-stop snow, good times were had by all!

Jade and I paint the town red.

Some random boarders get on the bus for the slopes. I liked all the pink.

Apparently hula hoopers are spotted frequently on the streets of Winter Park.

Talk about a room with a view , huh?

Another view from the house.

There was close to 12 inches of new snow. Which I appreciate from a distance.

Out the window on the drive home.
